The Running Skirt
All runners- short or long distance, beginner or advanced-would agree that comfort cannot be sacrificed for fashion when it comes to running clothes. Comfort always comes first, but what if it were possibleto have both? As a woman who literally lives in Nike running shorts paired with an old t-shirt, it didn’t seem likely to me that anything else could measure up to the comfort provided by my beloved running shorts. Reading Runner’s World, I became fascinated with the many pages dedicated to the rise of the “Running Skirt,” a very short athletic skirt with built in underwear or shorts underneath. I decided to give this fashionable alternative to athletic shorts a try in order to decipher my own opinion and reaction to the article. I wore it to cross country practice on a hot day- about 96 degrees with extremely high humidity- and my teammates immediately commented on how professional and fashionable i looked. Their commentary gave me a little pre-run boost of confidence and I ended up running really well… after all running is very mental. The skirt was cool and breezy. It moved right with me. No bunched up crotch. And the shorts underneath were tight enoough to provide some support and compression, but loose enough to allow air through. What’s not to like? I was definitely sold on the new trend. I dont plan on trashing all my great running shorts, but now i have a new option that allows me to have my cake and eat it too. Fashionable yet comfortable. These skirts come for any body type… very short skirts for those who already exude running confidence, more conservative skirts for those who are still getting into the swing of things, tight or looser shorts underneath, spankys (or underwear) underneath rather than shorts, a huge selection of brands and colors. There’s nothing wrong with looking pretty while you run- what guy doesn’t like a girl who can kick butt while looking good anyway?
