Run Renée, Run!

Posted by: MartiSmarti | Comments (0)

Did it ever occur to you as you are pounding down the sidewalk or trail, that you are running alongside “the Beautiful People”?

Renée Zellweger was named as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by ‘People Magazine.’

The 39 year old Texas-born daughter of a Swiss engineer and a Norwegian nurse-midwife is considered an “A-list” star in Hollywood and… she LOVES TO RUN.

Fitness is not something she takes for granted, either.   The petite star gained 28 pounds for her role in “Bridget Jones Diary.”  She says she “indulged every food fantasy; non-stop chocolate, along with ordering the pizza, the spaghetti, AND the garlic bread.”

She quickly lost those pounds again after the movie’s filming was over, but then a year or two later, she regained the weight to star in a sequel.   Zellweger says she remains horrified at what she put her body through.

“Can I just tell you my body is whacked by the time we finish one of those. It doesn’t know what has happened because it thinks there’s supposed to be a baby and there’s no christening. Did you see that movie about fast food, Supersize Me? I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you, long term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time and they’re all saying, ‘You must stop this now or you’re going to die’.”

As it is, Zellweger prefers a regimen of healthy food intake, regular running, and stretching exercises with occasional weights.   She’s all about keeping herself beautiful and healthy for a long time to come.

Ripa Loves Running!

Not her USUAL footwear!
Not her USUAL footwear!

Sitting at my desk with the TV on in the background, Regis and Kelly are blaring away in the other room.  Most of it is just background noise, but then I hear Kelly Ripa declare “I love running!”   That’s my girl!

At age 37, Kelly Ripa has done what many of us dream about: she’s given her abs, arms, and butt a total makeover. As Kelly puts it, “For the first time, I have muscles!”  But its her commitment to health and well-being that goes beyond crunches and curls.

Kelly admits to exercising as much as two hours per day (despite her busy schedule), and typically alternates between cardiovascular workouts and deep-tissue toning group classes. That amount of exercise is probably a bit much for most of us, but this next is always great news: Kelly Ripa carries that dedication through to meal-time for herself and her family.

“We’ve always been healthy eaters, mostly to keep our cholesterol levels down. There’s diabetes on Mark’s side of the family and my father had heart surgery, so we’re conscious on a level that we probably wouldn’t ordinarily be. It was my father having heart surgery 10 years ago that convinced me to get my cholesterol checked. I found out my number was 151, and the doctors told me, ‘Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it, because your cholesterol is low.’ That encouraged me to stay with a healthy diet, continue eating leafy greens, and try to cut back on saturated fat. Because it’s better to maintain what’s good now than try to fix what’s gone wrong later.”

Most of us don’t have a personal chef, like Kelly, but we can choose naturally healthy foods and meals that are low in cholesterol and high in nutrients. Kelly chooses lean proteins like fish or steak, eats plenty of dark greens and salads, and chooses chickpeas instead of pasta when cooking on her own.

Her focus was her image, and she got returns quickly.   “A month or two after I started working out, I wore a sleeveless turtleneck to work. Regis was like, ‘Ripa, your arm muscles look incredible!’ It was the first time anybody had ever said anything to me about my muscles. And because I am a vain person, that’s all I needed to hear to stay with it.”

Well, that and she does love running!

Celeb-Runner: Elizabeth Hasselbeck

Elizabeth Hasselbeck
We’re heading into the long, hot Labor Day weekend and somewhere out there, Elizabeth Hasselbeck is running.

You know who I’m talking about, right?  The Conservative One on ABC’s “The View.”  Also the beautiful, healthy-looking 31 year old mother of two small children and wife of NFL player, Tim Hasselbeck.  The picture here shows here as she participating in the Revlon Run/Walk for Women in New York City. The 5k event was to raise money to help fight cancer in women.  She wore a “In Support of Mom” sign pinned on her back.  Hasselbeck’s own mother battled breast cancer in the past.

And after two kids, Hasselbeck has had a few battles of her own, with her self image she says.

“Body image has nothing to do with scale “Go Elizabeth!”numbers, it’s how you feel inside,” Hasselbeck, told Fitness magazine. “This is the first time I’ve felt free from that, because I am working out in a way where I feel so strong that there’s no room for those doubts.”

She adds: “I finally told myself … ‘I’ve got some curves, I’ve got a bubble butt, but I don’t mind, because it’s what powers me forward when I run.’
It’s said she once ran a marathon with only a week or two’s notice.  Wow, that’s an Iron Woman.  But spending her time these days working with Babs, Joy, Whoopie, and Sherri plus starring down Rosie and Star in the past, yeah, you’d kind of guess she has some steel in there somewhere, right?
And leading the way in a race for healthy self-esteem among women is something all of us can be behind.  “GO ELIZABETH!!!”
